Nyneve (Nimue)
Nyneve, also known through the ages as Nimue, Ninianne, Viviane, and Elaine, is the first and most powerful of the White Witches. She is both the immortal Lady of the Lake and the Ur-Elemental of Water, a being of divine essence who walks between the worlds of WyrdeHaven and Earth.
Origin and Nature
Nyneve is believed to predate recorded Avalonian history, her essence born of the first confluence between the Eternal Flame and the primal Element of Water. Though she may appear as a woman, her true nature is fluid and eternal - a living current of mana given consciousness.
Her physical form is merely a vessel through which she may act in the mortal world, while her true being remains bound to the still waters of Avalon’s Lake Annaheloy.
Role as Lady of the Lake
Nyneve serves as guardian and keeper of sacred waters, the mediator between mortal and divine through reflection and renewal. She is the Guardian of the Great Sword, known to mortals as *Excalibur*, *Caledfwlch*, or *The Sword of Kings*.
When Arthur Pendragon was chosen by destiny, Nyneve bestowed upon him the Great Sword as a symbol of rightful kingship and balance. Her hand rising from the lake became a sign of divine sanction - not a gift of conquest, but of covenant.
The Warlock and Myrddyn
Nyneve was once the Lover of Myrddyn, the Warlock of his age. Their bond was one of perfect understanding - magic joined with wisdom, the immortal with the mortal. She was part of his Coven, guiding him and aiding in the maintenance of the Portals through the art of Water Transference.
Through this art, she ferried beings - Like Myrrddyn and Arthur Pendragon - across the rift between Earth and WyrdeHaven, carrying them safely through the waters of Avalon when the fixed Portals faltered.
The mortal myth that she trapped Myrddyn within a crystal tomb is an allegory, born from human misunderstanding of their union - he chose mortality, seeking release from the endless cycle, while she remained eternal.
Appearance and Aspect
Nyneve manifests as a tall, graceful woman of ageless beauty, her presence marked by the shimmer of light over still water. Her hair flows like liquid shadow shot with silver; her eyes carry the blue of deep lakes beneath moonlight. When invoking her full power, her form glows with shifting waterlight - a living reflection of the Flame itself.
Power and Abilities
- Water Transference - The ability to move beings through the veil between worlds using water as conduit.
- Reflection Magic - The power to reveal truth through still surfaces; she sees both past and future through the mirror of water.
- Healing and Renewal - Water made holy by her touch restores mana and calms mortal minds.
- Eternal Bond - She cannot be destroyed while water flows anywhere in WyrdeHaven or on Earth.
Relationship to the White Witches
As the first White Witch, Nyneve established the principles of elemental purity and sacred duty that define the Order. She taught that the role of the White Witch is not to dominate the elements but to embody them - to live as conduit rather than controller.
Her line of teaching was later inherited by Argante le Fay and passed down to Amy (White Witch), continuing the sacred lineage of Light through the ages.
