Portals
The Portals are ancient bridges linking WyrdeHaven and Earth, harmonized through ley resonance and the Eternal Flame’s pulse.
It is unknown *how* the first portal was established, but once it existed, more were created.
The Hearth Portal is said to have been the first - its origin lost to time, perhaps even to the dragons themselves.
It remains unclear whether all races existed on both worlds from the beginning, or if one seeded the other through the Portals, or if they evolved separately and later mingled.
If the latter, the widespread biological compatibility between species remains a mystery - though Dragons may owe theirs to blood-borne transformation magic, while Dwarves and the smaller Fae appear to be true exceptions.
Magical Function
Portals rely on resonant ley harmonics between two points - one on WyrdeHaven, one on Earth.
Each pair is stabilised by mana drawn from both sides; when Earth’s magic waned, most portals became dormant or were deliberately sealed to protect WyrdeHaven.
Through this residual resonance, the time of day on both worlds remains synchronised, even though their seasonal rhythms differ due to orbital disparities.
While most Portals are fixed, some - such as the Tara Gate - wander through time and space, seeking new anchor points where leylines knot or where humans possess innate mana potential.
Known Portals
| Status | WyrdeHaven Location | Earth Location | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Active and Stable | |||
| Hearth | Beneath the Royal Citadel | Undisclosed site in an English-speaking nation, western hemisphere | Believed to be the first Portal ever formed. Still active, heavily guarded. Its stability is sustained by the immense mana presence of the Dragon King. |
| Takama ga Hara | The Floating Bridge of Heaven, near the Warlock’s summer residence | Behind a waterfall beyond Takamahiko Shrine, Mt. Kongō, Nara Prefecture | Supported by the Warlock’s mana resonance and reinforced through Shinto-style renewal rites. |
| Possibly Active (intermittent) | |||
| Tara, Tír na nÓg - The King’s Hall | Hill of Tara | Tara, Ireland | Untethered in both time and space; believed to drift because it was never properly closed. The Tuatha de Danann maintain a small watch near the Tír na nÓg side to aid those who “fall through reality.”[1] |
| Lake Annaheloy, Tanadóir, Avalon | Sacred lake near the old monastery | Dozmary Pool, Altarnun, Cornwall | Functions through Lady of the Lake’s direct will; a Portal of pure Water magic, operating outside ley harmonics. |
| Inactive | |||
| Myrddynston | The Warlock’s Citadel | Stonehenge, Salisbury Plains | Closed during the Age of Waning; sealed with runes of binding and silence. No attempts to reopen it have been recorded. |
| Elysium | Temple of Zeus | Acropolis, Athens | Hellenic resonance; exhausted after the Fall of Olympus. Still faintly warm to mana-sensitive touch. |
| Tartarus | Temple of Hades | Knossos, Crete (Minoa) | Counterpoint believed destroyed; local leys fractured. With sufficient mana on one side, reactivation could be possible if the counterpart still existed. |
| Wetlands Tribe (Dracænaia) | Sacred grove | Ukraine (Amazons’ Portal) | Location kept secret by oath; possible survival of old Amazon lineage. |
| Kudrush | Chieftain’s Stronghold | Mongolia, near the Zhongguo Defense (Great Wall of China) | Lost during dragon migrations; residual energy occasionally stirs. |
| Gizeh, Ta'mery | Temple of Ra-t’Mery | Great Sphinx, Gizeh, Egypt | Now inert; some priests still report heat shimmer under the Sphinx at dawn. |
| Umalas, Court of Worlds (Principality) | Central forum | Bergen, Norway | Surmised origin of Cnut’s rise and the Great North Sea Empire. |
The Lady’s Portal
Unlike other gates, the Lady of the Lake’s portal is woven purely of Water magic, linking Lake Annaheloy in Avalon with Dozmary Pool on Earth.
It does not obey the ley harmonics of the others but flows through reflection and intention - opening only at the Lady’s command.
It is said that those who cross through it return changed: touched by renewal, memory, and calm.
Lost and Forgotten Portals
Though many Portals are known and catalogued, scholars and wanderers alike believe there were once far more - perhaps dozens - scattered across both worlds.
Some may have collapsed naturally when their ley anchors shifted or were consumed by geological change. Others were intentionally hidden or erased from records during the Age of Waning, when fear of corruption or invasion led to widespread sealing.
Fragments of portal rings and incomplete sigil circles have been discovered beneath ancient ruins in Avalon, Ta’mery, and even in the frozen caverns north of Dracænaia.
Occasional reports tell of faint glows or temporal distortions at such sites, but none have proven stable enough to reopen.
Because portal pairs are inherently reciprocal, even a buried or forgotten one on Earth could, in theory, reactivate if its WyrdeHaven counterpart were rediscovered and supplied with sufficient mana.
According to the Order of the Astral Bridge in Hearth, the total number of Portals ever built may have exceeded twenty-four, though fewer than half have been verified by modern scholars.
Magical Theory
Portals are believed to have been created through harmonic binding of the Eternal Flame’s reflection between worlds.
Scholars suggest that the first Portal established the resonance that forever synchronised the rotation (but not the seasons) of Earth and WyrdeHaven - a feat no mortal mage could replicate.
Later Portals were patterned upon this resonance, each attuned to a unique harmonic frequency.
The continuing abundance of mana and magical potential surrounding the Dragons and the Warlock are the sole reason the Hearth and Takama ga Hara Portals remain stable and active to this day.
Creation Theories
Three primary schools of thought attempt to explain the origin of the first Portal - and by extension, the possibility of interworld travel itself:
- Draconic Theory
- The oldest surviving belief, held by the dragons of Dracænaia, claims that the first Portal was a side effect of the Eternal Flame’s reflection - a moment where the Flame’s power folded space upon itself, forming a bridge of pure mana between twin realities. To them, the Flame ''willed'' the connection so that life might never be isolated from its reflection.
- Divine Theory
- Priests of Avalon teach that the Divine Couple - Gaia and Cernunnos - created the first Portal as a covenant between worlds: a vow that spirit and matter, heaven and earth, would remain in communion. The Hearth Portal’s sanctity in both realms supports this interpretation.
- Arcane-Human Theory
- Scholars of the modern age believe the first Portal was the result of mortal experiment - perhaps a fusion of Dragon and Human craft during the First Age. Proponents argue that ley harmonics this precise could not occur naturally, and that Hearth bears traces of both Draconic and Human rune forms in its foundation stone.
Cultural and Historical Notes
- The oldest surviving Portal inscriptions use Draconic runes overlaid with pre-Fae sigils.
- Some ancient rites of passage in Dracænaia required initiates to meditate before a sealed Portal to test their magical attunement.
- The Tara Gate’s erratic movement has inspired dozens of mortal legends about fairy abductions and time slips, particularly in Ireland and Cornwall.
